Google Maps visibility

Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps?

If customers can't find you on the map but your competitors are right there, it's almost always one of a handful of fixable problems. Here they are, in plain English.

The usual causes

Seven reasons you're invisible.

  • Your profile isn't verified yetAn unverified profile usually won't appear in the map at all. Verification is free, and it's the single most common reason a business is invisible.
  • Your primary category is wrongGoogle leans heavily on your primary category to decide which searches you belong in. A general contractor filed under “construction company” can quietly miss the searches that matter.
  • Your address and service area conflictIf you serve customers at their location, your address should be hidden and a service area set. Getting this combination wrong can suppress the listing entirely.
  • You're outside the searcher's radiusProximity is a major factor in map results. You may rank well two miles away and be invisible ten miles away — which is why you often see yourself but your customers don't.
  • You have too few reviewsReviews influence both ranking and whether someone clicks. A profile with three reviews rarely outranks a comparable one with sixty.
  • A duplicate listing is competing with youOld or automatically generated listings split your signals and can outrank the profile you actually manage. These need to be found and merged.
  • Your profile has been suspendedSuspensions happen quietly — often after an address edit, a name change, or a category switch. Many owners never receive a notification and just watch traffic disappear.

The good news

Every one of these is fixable.

None of this requires a new website or a big budget. It requires someone to work through the list properly — verify the profile, correct the categories, resolve duplicates, fix the service-area settings, and build a steady flow of reviews.

That's the work I do. If you want to know which of the seven is affecting you, I'll check for free and tell you straight.

Common questions

What business owners ask me most.

Why can I see my business on Google Maps but my customers can't?

Google personalizes results based on your location and history. Searching from your own shop, on your own device, while signed in to the account that owns the profile, is close to a best-case scenario — it isn't what a customer across town sees. Ask someone in another neighborhood to search, or check from a logged-out browser.

How long does it take to show up after verifying?

Most profiles begin appearing within a few days of verification, but ranking well takes longer. A brand-new profile in a competitive category can take a few months to climb, and it depends heavily on categories, reviews, and how complete the profile is.

Does my website affect my Google Maps ranking?

Yes, though indirectly. Your Google Business Profile drives the map results, but the website it links to helps Google judge relevance and legitimacy. A site that clearly states what you do and where you serve supports the profile.

Can I rank in areas where I don't have an address?

To a degree. Service-area businesses can appear in nearby areas, but proximity still favors businesses physically closer to the searcher. That's why targeting the specific communities you serve — with content built for each — matters more for a mobile business.
